QuickBooks Error 6000, 83: Fixing a Company File QuickBooks Can't Open or Restore

Error 6000, 83 appears when QuickBooks tries to open — or restore from a backup — and fails partway through, usually pointing at either a damaged company file or a blocked network path.

Why this happens

• The company file itself has data damage
• A restore was interrupted partway through (power loss, network drop)
• The file is being accessed from a network location QuickBooks can’t fully read
• Antivirus software is quarantining or locking part of the file during the open/restore process

Steps to fix it

1. Copy the company file to a local drive before doing anything else — never troubleshoot directly on a network share if you can avoid it.
2. Temporarily disable antivirus real-time scanning and try opening the file again; if it opens, add an exclusion for your QuickBooks folder afterward.
3. Run QuickBooks File Doctor from the QuickBooks Tool Hub to check for and repair company file damage automatically.
4. Try opening a recent backup (.QBB) instead of the live file to confirm whether the damage is isolated to the current file.
5. Use Auto Data Recovery (ADR) if no clean backup is available — QuickBooks stores .QBW.adr and .TLG.adr files that can rebuild a recent version of your data.

When to get help

Data recovery decisions matter — restoring the wrong backup or running the wrong repair tool can cost you more transactions than necessary.
